Rappahannock County and Its Towns

A Brief History of the County:

Rappahannock County:

Rappahannock County was named for the Rappahannock River, which in turn received its name from an Indian tribe that lived along its banks. There have been two Virginia counties named Rappahannock. The first was created from Lancaster in 1656 and became extinct in 1662 when it was divided into Essex and Richmond counties. The present county was formed from Culpeper County in 1833. Rappahannock County is located at the foot of Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains, and its ancestors found the picturesque rolling hills well suited to agricultural use, the principal industry. Today, more than forty percent of the county's 267 square miles is listed as farm land. The county seat is Washington. The population is 6,983 according to the 2000 census, making the population density 26.2 persons per square mile, 13.8 percent of whom are 65 years of age or older.
